Burning Man
”COMPASS”

An interactive drum circle

UNBUILD PROJECT / CONCEPT DESIGN, 2019

“Compass” is an interactive drum circle. 4 drums inspired by Water, Fire, Metal and Wood are arranged in a circle around the center piece. The round center platform symbolizes Earth and vibrates when the drums are in use. A yellow shade structure with light projections cover the installation.

Each drum generates a different frequency of vibration that can be felt by the people sitting or standing on the wooden center platform. To set off this effect, we will have signs installed that encourage people to drum. All drums are equipped with drumsticks, tethered with aircraft wires, and the sculptures will be sturdy enough to allow heavy impact.

When sitting in the center, a more passive way to experience the piece, one will feel the vibrations while observing projections reacting to the drumming. During the day the warm yellow shade structure will offer an inviting environment for people to mingle, enjoy the drum experience or to just spend time and take in the experience.
